NYSE Euronext celebrates corporate responsibility by hosting events at the New York Stock Exchange and other venues. Here are highlights from past initiatives including the Operation Hope financial literacy forum.

Financial Literacy Week, Monday 9th – Friday 13th, 2012

Each year, NYSE Euronext celebrates Financial Literacy week with a week-long series of partnership events and bell ringing ceremonies globally that highlights initiatives to help improve people’s financial capability. Highlights can be seen on this video.

April 9th Opening Bell:

  • Winners of the 2011 Workplace Leaders in Financial Education Awards: The workplace leaders in financial education awards recognize employers who offer exemplary workplace financial literacy programs to enhance employees’ financial well-being.
  • Listed companies who won: American Express, Therm-o-Disc (division of Emerson Electric) and NYX.
  • Guests included representatives from the 7 winning companies.

April 10th Opening Bell:

  • President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability: The President created this Council to assist the American people in understanding financial matters and making informed financial decisions, and thereby contribute to financial stability. It is composed of leaders in the financial capability field, including those from the non-profit, private and academic sectors.

April 10:

  • A meeting of the Youth Committee of the President's Advisory Council focused on "Financial Education for K-12: Challenges, Progress and Effective Approaches".
  • John Rogers, CEO and Chairman of Ariel Investments, and President of the Council attended.

April 11

NYSE Euronext hosted the 4th annual CR Forum “Our Corporations in Our Communities” in conjunction with Shared Xpertise, the publishers of CR Magazine and the Corporate Responsibility Officers’ Association announcing 2013’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens.

April 11th Opening Bell:

  • Cities for Financial Empowerment (CFE): CFE brings together pioneering municipal governments from across the country that has begun to use their power and positions to advance innovative financial empowerment initiatives.
  • Attendees included municipal leaders including Jonathan Mintz, Commissioner of the NYC Dept of Consumer Affairs and Deputy Commissioner, Financial Empowerment from the NYC DCA/OFE Cathie Mahon

April 11: Conference:

  • “Cities for Financial Empowerment: Innovative Approaches to Financial Stability and Growth” will discuss initiatives underway throughout the country that show promise in financial empowerment. Attendees will include companies participating in or funding these initiatives, as well as government officials and Foundation, academic and non-profit leaders from the financial empowerment field.
  • Discovery Education: “NYSE Euronext Virtual Field Trip”: a one hour segment broadcast to students across the globe: includes information on the NYSE’s history, a tour of the NYSE Trading Floor, interviews with NYSE executives, and a live Q and A for students with DN.

April 11th Closing Bell:

  • NFTE, CEE, and JA ring the Closing Bell to celebrate the launch of the NYSE Euronext Virtual Field Trip, which was created through a partnership with Discovery Education.
  • Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship: works closely with educators in high-need schools to re-engage students in learning, introduce them to business concepts, and open up their possibilities for the future.
  • Council for Economic Education: the leading organization in the United States that focuses on the economic and financial education of students from kindergarten through high school.
  • Junior Achievement: empowers young people to own their economic success. Our volunteer-delivered, K-12 programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire kids to dream big and reach their potential.

Operation Hope New York Financial Literacy Forum:
Rebirth of America, Post Economic Crisis

NYSE hosted the Operation Hope New York Financial Literacy Forum: Rebirth of America, Post Economic Crisis, bringing together well-known figures from financial media, financial services CEOs, foundation presidents, regulators, policymakers, non-profit leaders and even civil rights legend, Ambassador Andrew Young, who serves as the HOPE global spokesperson, to discuss the critical role of entrepreneurship and financial education in building a more secure, more inclusive financial future.  Learn more about the event here and watch videos from the event here.

  • Forum: “Financial Literacy in the Workplace: Empowering Employees Beyond the 401(k),” Leading experts made the business case for the importance of workplace financial fitness, outlined the elements of effective financial capability programs, and introduced and discussed the new Workplace Financial Fitness Toolkit.   • NYSE Euronext Paris Bell Ringing to celebrate the global partnership between NYSE Euronext and Junior Achievement. 
  • Workshop: “Financial Capability in Our Communities: Collaboration Across Sectors.” Empowering individuals with the financial knowledge and skills they need to build more secure futures requires collaboration among the nonprofit, government, and private sectors. Many companies in the NYSE Euronext community are working in unique and exciting partnerships with non-profits. At this workshop, leaders from these companies and nonprofits shared their successes in finding innovative approaches to improve financial capability.
  • “Virtual Field Trip to the NYSE,” in partnership with Discovery Education.This educational program helped students in grades 6–12 learn the fundamentals of finance, money responsibility and how markets work. More than 50,000 students from all 50 states and countries as far as Korea and Japan viewed the live broadcast.

  • NYSE Euronext established a new Corporate Financial Capability Leadership Council to help coordinate the efforts of the many corporate leaders doing good work in this field. The meeting concluded with the Council members ringing the Closing Bell.

NYSE Closing Bell: “Girls’ Financial Empowerment,” with the Girl Scouts and Girls Inc. This bell ringing celebrated the good work of nonprofits that promote financial empowerment and financial capability for girls.

"Celebrating Corporate Citizenship" Forum

Co-hosted with the Corporate Responsibility Officers Associationa and Shared Xpertise, publishers of CR Magazine, this event included a live announcement of CR Magazine’s12th Annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens ListTM, as well as discussion among thought leaders in the corporate responsibility field from the private sector, academia, and non-profits.  The event included a keynote address from Michael Porter, the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School and author of the recent cover article in the Harvard Business Review “Creating Shared Value”. The afternoon included a presentation of the seminal Boston Consulting Group and MIT survey- Sustainability: The ‘Embracers’ Seize the Advantage, presented by Michael Hopkins, Editor-in-Chief of MIT Sloan Management Review and Martin Reeves, BCG, as well as a forum discussion “Changing the Competitive Equation:  Sustainability as Competitive Advantage” featuring many of our nation’s corporate responsibility leaders.  To mark this special occasion, representatives from the top-ranked companies in this year’s list rang the Closing Bell™. USA Focal Point: Launch of
Global Reporting Initiative USA

NYSE Euronext is an Organizational Stakeholder ofthe Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a network-based organization that pioneered the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework.  GRI marked its official launch in the United States with the Focal Point USA hosted at the NYSE.  In addition to the celebration, thought leaders on corporate transparency and sustainability addressed the question, “Why is America letting the world lead in sustainability reporting?”
